Road Safety Concerns in Nepal
Road accidents are a significant public safety issue in Nepal, with thousands of people injured or killed annually. Statistics indicate that motorcycles account for approximately 56 percent of all vehicles involved in road accidents. Common causes of such incidents include speeding, reckless overtaking, poor road conditions (such as potholes, construction debris, or slippery surfaces), and driver negligence.
Legal provisions concerning road accidents in Nepal are governed by the Vehicle and Transport Management Act 2049 (BS). This act outlines various penalties, ranging from life imprisonment for intentional acts leading to death to up to one year in prison for deaths resulting from accidents despite exercising caution. Additional penalties apply if the driver does not possess a valid driving license.
