Pushpa Kamal Dahal, chairman of CPN (Maoist Centre), warned on Saturday that Nepal is being pushed towards an “extraordinary crisis” and urged communist forces to unite and pro-democratic parties to cooperate to safeguard the constitution and federal democratic republic. Speaking at a unity meeting in Kavre on October 3, 2026 (Ashoj 17, 2083 BS), Dahal stated that the country has not been in a normal state since the “regressive destruction” of last year’s Gen Z movement.
Dahal reiterated his concerns, stating that “malicious attempts are underway to push the country towards an extraordinary crisis.” He had previously made similar remarks in Birgunj, Parsa, on Ashoj 1 (BS) and Mirchaiya, Siraha, on Bhadra 25 (BS), describing Nepal as facing the most severe national crisis and extraordinary political situation since the Sugauli Treaty. According to Dahal, foreign powers have begun to dictate Nepal’s political future since the events of Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 (September 8 and 9, 2025), claiming the country is no longer in the hands of Nepalis.
Background to the Crisis
The “Gen Z movement” began on Bhadra 23, 2082 (September 8, 2025), following a government ban on 26 social media platforms and widespread protests against corruption and nepotism. The protests escalated into nationwide demonstrations, riots, arson, and looting by Bhadra 24 and 25, 2082. On Bhadra 24, 2082 (September 9, 2025), protestors set fire to and vandalized key government structures, including Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, the Supreme Court, the President’s Residence Sheetal Niwas, the Prime Minister’s Residence Baluwatar, and private residences of ministers and former prime ministers. The then-Prime Minister resigned on the same day. Human Rights Watch reported that 17 protestors died in Kathmandu due to excessive police force on Bhadra 23, 2082.
An interim government was formed under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki following the events of Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082. Later, on Kartik 19, 2082 (November 5, 2025), ten left-wing parties and groups, including CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist), merged to form the Nepali Communist Party (नेकपा).
Calls for Unity and Accountability
Dahal stressed that the current challenges cannot be met with old approaches. He called for party unity among “true communist forces” and cooperation among parties supporting the constitution and federal democratic republic to confront the present situation. He also argued against the narrative that nothing was achieved after the establishment of the republic, stating that his government played a significant role in transforming the country from a feudal monarchy to a federal democratic republic.
Dahal emphasized the need for a “large front and movement” to return Nepal to the hands of its people and restore their rights. Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has demanded a fair, transparent, and legal investigation into the events of Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082. Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has also called for an impartial, independent, and credible investigation into these incidents. Dahal further accused the government of concealing the investigation report on the Gen Z movement.
The specific nature of the “extraordinary crisis” mentioned by Dahal and the identity of the “regressive forces” involved in the “regressive destruction” remain undefined. The status or findings of the Gen Z movement investigation report are not publicly available.
