A team of Chinese scientists has arrived in Nepal to conduct a 20-day field study with Nepali counterparts on the devastating Bhote Koshi flood and landslides that occurred on August 26, 2026. The disaster, which originated from a massive glacial collapse in Nepal’s northern region, has left 45 students missing in Rasuwa district and caused estimated damages exceeding Rs 387 billion.

Durga Prasad Silwal, chief of the Dhunche Education and Coordination Unit, reported on Monday, October 5, 2026, that 45 students from three government and one private school in Rasuwa are still unaccounted for following the flood. As of the same date, 1,457 bodies have been recovered.

Extensive Damage and Financial Toll

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Nepal’s disaster management body, initially estimated the total damage from the flood to be over Rs 387 billion. Another report suggests physical damage exceeding Rs 408 billion, with rehabilitation efforts projected to cost Rs 723 billion.

The energy sector alone has suffered an estimated Rs 74 billion in damages, affecting 1,292 megawatts (MW) of hydropower projects, with 431 MW of electricity disconnected from the national grid. (See also: Floods damage hydropower projects, minister proposes whole river control)

The flood also damaged 7,570 private buildings, resulting in losses of Rs 63.08 billion.

By October 2, 2026, the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA), the country’s insurance regulatory body, had received 2,180 insurance claims related to the flood, totaling an estimated Rs 20.98 billion. However, only Rs 6.74 million has been paid out so far. To expedite the process, NIA issued a ‘Brief Procedure 2083’ on September 24, 2026, allowing advance payments of up to 50 percent of estimated damage based on preliminary surveyor assessments and permitting insurers to settle small claims up to Rs 500,000 themselves. Digital or alternative evidence is accepted if physical documents are destroyed.

Scientific Study and Government Response

The joint Chinese and Nepali scientific team will study the source, evolution, and impact of the disaster. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has clarified that the Bhote Koshi flood was not caused by rainfall.

The August 26, 2026, event was triggered when a massive chunk of rock and glacial ice, approximately 2,000 feet wide, fell about 7,000 feet from Langtang Lirung mountain into the river, releasing energy equivalent to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. Nepal has termed this event a ‘Himalayan Tsunami’ and raised the issue of climate justice at the United Nations.

Prime Minister Balen Shah discussed the flood with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who pledged humanitarian assistance. India has also sent Bailey bridges to reconnect areas where roads and bridges were destroyed. Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, chairing the Central Monsoon Response Command Post, decided to shift the focus from search and rescue to recovery and rehabilitation.

The NDRRMA’s executive committee has decided to prioritize the search for missing citizens, identification and management of bodies and human remains, and the rehabilitation of affected citizens and basic infrastructure. The government estimates Rs 8 billion for immediate recovery and over Rs 700 billion for long-term reconstruction.

The Madhesh Province government has also announced relief and assistance for flood-affected citizens and the deceased. The floodwaters reached hundreds of kilometers downstream through the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, impacting Chitwan and Nawalparasi (East and West) districts, which are part of Madhesh Province.

Unanswered Questions Remain

Details regarding the specific scientists involved in the 20-day joint study, its exact start and end dates, and its preliminary findings are not yet public. The timeline for the payment of the remaining insurance claims is also unclear. Furthermore, the precise number of missing persons varies across different sources, and a clear plan for sourcing the over Rs 700 billion required for long-term reconstruction has not been publicly announced.
