Russia attacked Kyiv’s strategic Northern Bridge on Saturday, October 3, 2026, damaging the road surface and trolleybus electrical contact network, causing significant traffic disruptions in the Ukrainian capital.

The Russian Ministry of Defence, the official body of the Russian armed forces, claimed responsibility for the drone attack. It stated that the 800-meter-long bridge over the Dnipro River was being used by Ukrainian forces for troop movement and military equipment transport, and the attack aimed to disrupt these supply lines.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the attack, stating that traffic from the left bank to the right bank of the Northern Bridge was completely closed due to the damage. The incident led to continuous traffic jams for three consecutive days, with videos released by Ukrainian media showing extensive congestion in one of the capital’s areas.

In addition to the Northern Bridge, Russian drone strikes also targeted a logistics center in Hostomel, Kyiv region, where military supplies were reportedly stored. A cargo ship carrying dual-purpose equipment bound for Odesa was also targeted in the northwestern Black Sea, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.

This latest assault follows earlier Russian attacks on Kyiv’s infrastructure. On October 1 and 2, 2026, the Southern Bridge, another vital crossing over the Dnipro River, was hit by drone strikes. These attacks damaged the road surface, a bridge pillar, railings, and the metro’s protective concrete decking. As a result, three of Kyiv’s six road bridges over the Dnipro River were either fully or partially closed.

While Russian attacks across Ukraine have resulted in at least six fatalities, reports regarding casualties from the Northern Bridge attack are conflicting. Some sources indicate two people were injured, with one briefly hospitalized, while others state there were no casualties in this specific incident.

Strategic Importance and International Reaction

The attacks underscore the strategic importance of Kyiv’s bridges, which connect the city’s eastern and western parts. Strana.ua, citing local officials, reported that the Southern Bridge alone handles up to 90 percent of road transit between Ukraine’s eastern and western regions, including a substantial portion of military supplies. Ukrainian MP Volodymyr Kreidenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, stated that lawmakers are discussing the use of ferries and temporary pontoon bridges if the damage to key crossings is severe and prolonged.

The intensified attacks have drawn international condemnation. Moldova’s President Maia Sandu denounced Russia’s actions, expressing concern that the war is “dangerously reaching” her country.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began over four and a half years ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had approved a 40-day strategic influence campaign on June 25, 2026, aimed at pressuring Russia to end the conflict. This campaign reportedly involved long-range attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, logistics centers, and military supply lines.

The Russian side claims its recent intensification of attacks on military logistics and defense industry-related structures is a direct response to Zelensky’s “40-day pressure campaign” against targets within Russia.

Future Implications and Restrictions

Repair work on the Northern Bridge’s damaged road surface and trolleybus electrical wires is currently underway. The Kyiv City Military Administration (KMDA) has also announced new restrictions on bridge traffic during air raid alerts to enhance safety and manage potential further damage.

Under these new rules, during the first fifteen minutes of an air raid alert, traffic on the Southern Bridge will be restricted from the right bank to the left bank. The Podilsko-Voskresensky Bridge will be completely closed in both directions for the initial fifteen minutes of an alert. However, the Northern Bridge, Metro Bridge, Darnytskyi Bridge, and Paton Bridge may continue to operate without restrictions during such warnings.

Experts suggest that while individual drone attacks are unlikely to cause immediate collapse, repeated strikes could necessitate prolonged bridge closures and lead to long-term structural degradation.

The full extent of the damage to the Northern Bridge is not yet entirely clear, and conflicting reports persist regarding the exact number of casualties from the attack. The precise strategies and specific targets of President Zelensky’s 40-day campaign also remain classified.
