Doctors Plead Prez For Dr. KC's Life
Kathmandu Aug 17: A group of doctors from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital today met President Ram Baran Yadav, urging him to intervene to protect the life of Prof Govinda KC, who has been on fast-unto-death in a bid to prevent political appointments for key posts in Institute of Medicine.
Prof Dinesh Binod Pokhrel, chairperson of IoM chapter of the Tribhuvan University Teachers’ Association, said the President had already instructed Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to hold a meeting with TU VC
Prof Hira Bahadur Maharjan to resolve the issue.
Dr KC, head of orthopaedic department of TUTH, has been on fast-unto-death for four days, demanding merit-based appointments to key posts at IoM and disciplinary action against institute officers found guilty of irregularities, corruption and misappropriation of funds.
TUTH doctors have also written a letter to three major political parties to stop political interference in education institutions. “We have urged Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist to desist from making political appointments to the key posts of the hospital,” added Pokhrel.
It is learnt that TU vice chancellor, Registrar Dr Chandra Mani Poudel and Education Minister Dina Nath Sharma met today to dwell on doctors’ demands.
