Murder of Madhesh

Addthis

Ram dyal rakesh / This administrative structure to divide Madhesh from the rest of the country was prevalent till Rana rule. Madheshis had to obtain visa to enter hilly region, including Kathmandu in the Rana's period. The discriminating administrative Attitude toward Madheshis had, thus, given rise to different identities among Madheshis other than being attached to Nepal. Till Rana regime, it seemed that Nepal government who influenced by British rulers in India, and was governing Madhesh like a colony.'' In the words of Upendra Yadav:

'' The biggest Terai belt lies in the Southern Nepal Adjacent to Indian border. It is elevated upto 600 metres from the sea level. It comprises 23% of the total land areas of Nepal and 56% of its cultivated land. It has been formed out alluvium constantly deposited by the rivers flowing down the Gangetic plain. The terai and is fertile for agriculture where wide varities of crops are grown. The northern part of Terai is very beautiful area situable for the developmewnt of the tourism and live stock, farming'' Upendra Yadav has defined Madhesh in the right context: '' The word Terai is of relatively recent origin and is used Inter changeably for Madhesh which is derived from the Sanskrit word '' Madhyadesh'' meaning the land between the foot hills of the Himalayan mountain in the north and the Vindhya mountain on the South. People living in this region have been called '' Madheshee or Madheshiyas.

Manu the law maker of the Hidus also mentioned the term Madhyadesh. The word Madhesh is also found in Buddhist Pali literature e.g. the Vinayapitaka. In the last I would like to quote: '' Madheshis are indigenous people of Nepal since ancient time, who inhabitated the southern part of Madhesh from East to West in between the northern Indian border and the foothills. They resemble Indian's physical appearance and the constitute half of the population of the modern Nepal.'' History:- Over the centuries, parts of the Madhesh have been under the sway of both the Nepali and Indian empires. Some of it regions were inhabited by sophisticated agricultural and urban communities as early as 800 B.C., but the empires have come an dgone, and at times the countryside has been completely reclaimed by forest.

The stories of the area's decline are largely unknown, but disease and war certainly played a role some parts were most recently depopulated as a result of the Muslim invasion of the 14th century. Sidhartha Gautam-Buddha was born in 563 B.C. at the lovely lap of LUMBINI. Siddhartha was the son of Sudhodana who ruled a small state from Kapilvastu. Tilorakot was the Capital of Kapilvastu. He was the world famous son of Madhesh, who has been called as the Light of Asia. Dinesh Regmi has shed light on it. It is not that these sites are unknown. Dinesh Regmi is quite right to say: '' The Political history of these regions is little known. It is not known whether these regions were included in Tirhut.

However the Capital was not very far from these regions.' Sita is the world-renowned daughter of Madhesh whom was born in Janakpur, the Capital city of Mithila. She was the beautiful daughter of King Janak. Sita was married to Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic the Ramayana, written in the 1st and 2nd century B.C. Madhesh is proud of Mithila which has rich and renowned Cultural heritage. Maurayan Empire was flourishing at Patna in India in 321 B.C. and it was winning the small principalities in and around it.

Ashoka, the great emperor conquered more of the subcontinent. He was the greatest folower and missionary of Buddhism. He visited Lumbini and erected a stone pillar in 245 B.C. Butwal and Parasi were explored almost a century ago by PC Mukherjee and Dr. N.Hoey '' in search of Lumbini and Ramagam.'' It is also believed that he also visited Kathman du and erected Ashokan pillar in Patan. He was one of the greatest emperors of India. The Pillar at Lumbini commemorates Ashoka's pilgrimage to the birthplace of Buddha. It is 6

m high, although half of it is underground. It is inscribed with te following words:'' king ashoka, the beloved ofGods, in the 20th Year of the coronation, made a royal visiT. A Stone railing and a stone pillar were erected inhonor of Buddha who was born here. Because Buddha was born here, the village of Lumbni was freed from paying tax. The next great empire which rose in Madhesh was the Gupta empire which flourished between AD 300 and 600. It exerted its influence even on Kathmandu and beyond.

Mughals invaded this region in the early 13th century and drove away Hindu towards territory of Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley. It is believed that one one of these groupsfounded the Malla dynasty . King Yaksha Malla had extended its power from Kathmandu to South region upto the Ganga river by the 15th Century. Then the Shah dynasty won control over it in 1768 and expanded its border up to the Gangetic plain. It also extended its border in the east and west along the Himalaya. To be continued......................The voice of madhesh
